Just west of Abilene, Kansas, along U.S. 40, stands a landmark of the town’s rich history and cuisine. For over 80 years, Mr. K’s Farmhouse stood as a reminder to the community for its humble service and honest, great-tasting food. JRI Hospitality is proud to announce that we will continue honoring its longstanding history by bringing people together with delicious comfort food and friendly service. We’re excited to share the details of this acquisition and what this means for JRI and Mr. K’s Farmhouse.
Mr. K’s Farmhouse is a Community Institution
At JRI Hospitality, we believe food brings people together. If you’ve ever stepped inside Mr. K’s Farmhouse, that sentiment could not be any closer to the truth. Its original owner, Lena Benson, operated the restaurant until 1974 and personally fed each guest. After a 20-year hiatus, the property was purchased by Ed and June Kuntz, who continued serving the community with quality food and personable customer service.
For decades, the restaurant acts as a congregation where community members can unwind with their family and friends, enjoy a hot plate of food, and of course, revel in their famous pies. Mr. K’s Farmhouse has become more than just another restaurant in Abilene, it’s become a unique institution.
JRI Hospitality Will Honor Mr. K’s Farmhouse History
While the purchase is a departure from JRI Hospitality’s four main brands (Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, Chompie’s, The Original Grande, and Mokas Cafe), it perfectly matches everything we believe a restaurant should be. Mr. K’s Farmhouse emphasizes quality menu items matched with friendly customer service, which creates a welcoming dining experience for every guest. While some menu items may change, the restaurant’s focus on cordial service and delicious comfort food will be preserved.
Jason Ingermanson, founder and CEO of JRI Hospitality, said, “the company is proud to carry on Mr. K’s Farmhouse legacy and continue its impact on the community.”
“When we had the opportunity to purchase this historic property and restaurant, we couldn’t pass it up,” Ingermanson said. “Mr. K’s Farmhouse is a local institution, and we wanted it to stay in local hands while bringing our extensive expertise in restaurant management to the table. We’re confident the restaurant will have a bright future and continue to be a part of the Abilene community.”
